Game Trailer Review

Our Game Design class is discussing game trailers this week, and the trailer I chose to bring to the table is the "No Place for a Hero" Batman: Arkham City trailer. When this trailer came out in 2011 following the fantastic 2009 game Batman: Arkham Asylum, it re-energized and excited the Batman fanbase. Although it starts and finishes off with intense, gritty scenes that set the tone for the world and story within the game, the trailer isn't all darkness and drama. The middle combines stunning action-movie-like shots of gameplay and key characters with an upbeat song that personally made me really eager to step into Batman's shoes and be that cool. The slightly lighter tone of the middle of the trailer recognizes that it's a video game, and seems to promise that it'll be a fun, kick-ass time. The fact that this trailer shows that the team had this attitude towards the game (not taking themselves too seriously as well as consciously making choices because they're cool even if they're not 100% realistic) gave the fans a lot of hope that it would deliver in terms of being an exciting new installment that stayed true to the essence of Batman. (And that it did!)
